Moving ahead…I want to hear from you

It’s been no secret that in recent months, I have looked at ways to monetize this blog. I work in the non-profit sector and while I love my work, it’s not exactly a big money maker, so supplementing my income is a good thing. I love blogging and enjoy the process and while this blog has grown over the years in terms of readers and recognition, for the most part my attempts at monetization have failed.

Oh, I tried Blog Her, but it simply wasn’t a fit, and while I do have a relationship with EdenFantasys, most of the rewards aren’t financial. I have offered direct advertising but the downside of not having a true niche is advertisers are hesitant. I can’t say I blame them.

Even direct appeals don’t exactly kick up a lot of support except with the most die hard of readers. Right now I am still looking to raise the cash to hit a few conferences this year and that is looking more and more like a dream yet again.

I get it! For many, the idea of paying for something like reading a blog doesn’t sit well either due to lack of ability or desire. Why drop a few bucks in my tip jar when you can read someone else’s blog and not have to worry about it. Believe me I understand. So I am playing with some ideas that one of my favorite bloggers gave me for monetization but before I go that route, I would like to hear from you.

So I am asking today, if you might take the brief survey that follows this post, so that I can get a sense of what my readers want and are willing to support. I would great appreciate hearing directly from you.

Look, I have made no secret that I have played around with the idea of monetizing this blog. I most certainly have no illusions that I am about to become the next Dooce or Pioneer Woman, I am not nearly as charming as those gals and frankly running an small non-profit keeps me plenty busy. That said while this started off as a hobby and I enjoy the fuck out of it and am grateful for any and all readers, the reality is being a steady blogger is work. Sex is fun and it’s work too and normally we like that reward we get at the end of a great session!

Since moving to self hosting there is not only the time spent writing but a small outlay of cash, that realistically I probably shouldn’t be spending but I do since ultimately I like what I do here. That said, as bloggers earning a little cash for their work becomes more the norm, I admit if I could do the same it would certainly be nice and help defray costs and hell maybe even help fund a dinner, the dental fund or whatever. Yet it’s not key to my survival as a blogger since it all comes down to the fact I like blogging, fuck…it’s a hobby!

Now I tried the publishing network thing (she who shall remain unnamed) and it wasn’t for me, too many damn rules, and frankly not enough pay off. Two months with she who shall remain unnamed and I didn’t even earn $20! Plus you gotta wait to get the cheddah…nah, that’s not me. If I am hawking products I don’t use and feeling sleazy I need a little something extra, yeah I am high maintenance like that!

So we got the fabulous tip jar which I hope folks use but realize many feel skeevy about doing so, after all this is my labor of love. So I am looking at advertising and sponsored posts but being me I don’t know if it’s practical since well…I do have a day job. I also don’t have huge numbers, I mean I am no Uppercase Woman! (I love her blog)

So I am going to test these concepts out, by offering a few weeks of free, that’s right free advertising to any organizations that are either Maine based, woman owned or Black owned companies.(restrictions apply but we can discuss if you are interested) I want to play with making sure I can actually install ads since I am not a tech gal and pretty much make that man o mine do the background stuff here. I also want to make sure it feels like a good fit for me. Much like my time with she who remain unnamed network, ads may just not work and in that case, project monetize will officially end.

So if you are interested, want to create some advertising for your hopefully cool product or service, reach out and let me know. My email addy is on the side bar or leave a message. Thanks luvs!

Sprucing Up the Joint

Happy Hump Day folks! I think today I will pass on sharing any deep thoughts but did want to acknowledge that I have done some housekeeping around the blog. Gone are the Blog Her ads, my relationship with the Blog Her network was a mismatch and we said our goodbyes. Sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side then you realize you were looking at it from the wrong angle.

I changed the template a bit to brighten up things, also my eyes told me they needed something brighter….that pesky aging thing!

I am still playing with ideas for monetization, knowing full well as a blog this can’t be really categorized, it may not happen and that is fine too. Thankfully I kept my day job, so if becoming a social media rock star doesn’t work, I can still play the role of Wonder Woman helping those in need. Seriously though I would love to work with any women owned, Black owned, or Maine based companies with cool products I like and use, more on that here.

You will notice I have added a tip jar function, a reader actually suggested I put something up, I thought long and hard because as a blogger I have learned people don’t like being asked for cheddar aka money. Granted it takes money to make the world go around and I can relate, I don’t want to be that pesky tip jar that you seem to see everywhere on the counter. Hell, I am surprised fast food joints don’t have them! That said, I do talk about my life and if you are a regular reader, you know any thing you throw in the jar will be put to good use between my never ending dental work, desires to attend this conference and just life. No pressure though. Lastly I have a list of books I recommend, many I have mentioned in blog posts, if any look good, by all means check em out!

Not sure how this blog will evolve, I would love to really do a major redesign but I don’t have the skills and frankly can’t put the money into it at this time. Anyway tell me what you think of the new look!
