Addressing Racism in Maine…upcoming events (Updated)

Part of solving a problem involves admitting that a problem exists. Talking about racism in Maine is a loaded issue, no one wants to see their beloved state being slammed and sullied. Yet I have been in Maine since 2002 and for all the wonderful things that I have come to love about this state (yes, there are things that I love about Maine), I don’t love how so many of my fellow residents refuse to acknowledge that discrimination and bigotry are very real and that for Mainers of color, we often have a very tumultuous relationship with the state.

However there are many people and organizations in the state that are committed to moving the needle and creating an anti-racist lens, so I am sharing a series of upcoming events that are being sponsored by the University of Southern Maine’s- Multicultural Student Affairs Group. I personally recommend catching the sessions with Dr. Eddie Moore, Moore is the founder and creator of the White Privilege Conference which I have had the pleasure of attending. Dr. Moore is a phenomenal educator…nuff said!

  1. Thanks, Shay, for posting all of Dr. Eddie Moore’s speaking engagements. The L-A area is incredibly excited about his coming to spend time with us. I admire your writing so publicly about your reality, offering your insights and standing up when it is difficult. Courage in this new year, for all of us.

  2. Hi Shay,
    Dr. Moore will be in the Lewiston area as well. There is a public presentation on Thursday evening at the Lewiston Public Library at 7 pm. The presentation is also titled, “America Is Changing. Are You Ready” This presentation is also free and open to the public! For more information, contact;
    Thank you for helping us get the word out!

  3. Mooching for money is one thing. But blatantly linking to your Amazon account, and loudly hinting for birthday gifts is pure greed. You were born?! Wow. So were billions of other humans. It seems so childish, a middle-aged woman making a fuss over her “born day.” I also couldn’t believe that you have 10 pages, too. Most people have a handful of items that they want, but not Princess Gimme More.

    • Albie…she isn’t the first person to post a wish list online and it’s labeled magical thinking precisely because she doesn’t expect any (or more than a tiny number) of people to get her so much as the most minor item on that list….and it’s as much for my reference (her husband) and relatives or more so than for anyone else. Get a clue and get some perspective. She provides a service, as much as any author or journalist, and if she wants to give the option of a gift rather than cash, who are you to judge her? Go back to your cave

  4. TThanks Shay for the information and USM does an excellent job here. Last year the events had to be cancelled because of the weather . So should be double attended this time. By the way Shay … did I see you rushing down Monument Sq. at about noon today ?
